I have participated in Hand-In-Hand every year of college. Hand-In-Hand is a mentoring program that is part of the Hamline to Hamline Collaboration with Hamline Elementary and Hamline University. With this program, I was able to be a mentor to a "buddy" across the street at Hamline Elementary. With this mentorship, I got to see the importance of having a mentorship when children are still very young. Early intervention mentoring is so important specifically when helping children develop those skills that will help them navigate the personal and professional spheres. I specifically worked with my buddies on developing organizational skills, attitudes around jealousy and greed, discussing with them about race issues and the importance of MLK Day and developing self-esteem and resiliency. I will always reflect fondly on my time with my buddies even if it was only for a short amount of time.
