In between my second and third year at Hamline, I had the opportunity to be an intern at Sojourner Project. Sojourner Project is a domestic violence shelter in the Hennepin County area. This internship consisted of my working mostly on the shelter side of Sojourner Project. At the shelter, I would answer the crisis line, screen possible residents, help with intakes and help with the various needs that residents might have. I specifically helped facilitate the children's programming at the shelter and helped facilitate Domestic Violence Support Group. When facilitating the Children's Programming, we focused on building self-esteem, resiliency and ensuring the children had someone to talk to if they have experienced violence. In Domestic Violence Support Group, the topics would range, but they were mostly ways to build community, resiliency, self-esteem and were very healthy relationships and goal focused to help the mothers get back on their feet. Once my internship had finished, I was hired on as relief staff where I currently work. I have been and always will be amazed at the resiliency that the women and children I worked with had. They taught me as much as I taught them. It also reminded me how important it can be to just be physically there for someone whether it is a five minute phone conversation or offering resources.
