I was fortunate enough to be a New Student Mentor (NSM) for two years of college. As a New Student Mentor, I had my own group of first-year students who I would mentor and help get adjusted to college. With this position, I would put on programming to help them get connected, attend their first year seminar, work with a faculty and staff member on ways to best help our first years on whatever issues come up. This position taught me the importance of mentorship within social justice work. It showed me how having a mentor right when individuals get into college helps promote not only academic adjustment, but it also helps the students get socialized. Mentorships are critical in the success of navigating through academia and for creating a culture that supports social justice. I specifically acted as a navigational tool for my first-years to find the resources they needed. I also worked as a support system that worked on building self-esteem in each individual. Overall, my time as an NSM was a very valuable experience that taught me a lot.
